An interesting day today!
Down to the Institute of Education today for a meeting with colleagues from the Early Years and Primary Committee (EYPPC) of the GA, which also hosted Mick Waters, to discuss the place for geography within the Primary Review. As you may know, there is a PRIMARY REVIEW of the curriculum that is ongoing.
The last time I saw Mick Waters it was as a 'talking head' in the 'Big Picture' video on the QCA website (which seems to have disappeared now... - the video that is, not the QCA...), but here he was talking through some thoughts on how the Primary curriculum needs to change, and some possible models for that change. There were some excellent presentations by members of the EYPPC, focussing on the excellent work being done in primary schools, and outlining why geography needs to be a part of every primary school child's education. The Geographical Association has certainly championed the work done in this sector, notably through the PRIMARY QUALITY MARKS, and the recently announced PRIMARY CHAMPIONS.
Thanks to colleagues in the Early Years and Primary Committee for inviting me. The discussions that have followed have been very useful, particularly the links with creativity (more on that in a future posting). We will wait to see what the outcomes are...
