Ecolint Geography Conference 2018 - Post #4 of 4 - Heading for the Alps, and then home...

ECOLINT Conference over (see previous blog posts using the Label to the right to display them) it was time for some exploration. Picked up by Richard and Ellena after breakfast, and it was off to the mountains, crossing the border back into France.

We were heading along the River Arve, to Chamonix, where we parked up and then headed for the Montenvers Railway. This little red cog train heads up to the Mer de Glace, a place I'd always wanted to visit. A coffee in the sun, and then we headed up into the Alps on the train to the top station from where we had a fantastic view down to the Mer de Glace, and a lot further down it was that it used to be apparently, as shown by the markers which showed the level of the ice in different years. We descended the steps to the level of the glacier, and then into an ice cave / tunnel - there were lots more steps than the last time Richard had been, and it was a new ice cave / tunnel too...
We then headed back up the hundreds of steps, and in the telecabine, and went to the cafe for lunch, and then the museum of glaciation, before heading down to the station, where we managed to cram aboard the little red train back down - plenty of skiers on board - the season was still just about hanging on. A spot of shopping before heading back to Geneva, and a night catching up with admin before an early flight back to Stansted.
